NCDC JUDGE APPROVAL AND CLASSIFICATION POLICY

Purpose

The purpose of the NCDC Judge Approval and Classification Policy is to establish a transparent, fair, and consistent process for evaluating and approving judges while preserving the discretion necessary to assess each applicant on their individual merits.

The NCDC recognizes that judging competency is developed through a combination of competitive success, technical knowledge, professional development, community involvement, and demonstrated ability to evaluate dancers accurately. As such, no single accomplishment automatically guarantees approval, except where specifically noted within this policy.

The Committee reserves the right to approve, deny, defer, or assign applicants to any judging tier based on the totality of their qualifications and demonstrated readiness.

Guiding Principles

The Committee seeks judges who can:

  • Apply objective standards consistently.

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of technique and fundamentals.

  • Evaluate dancers fairly across all eligible divisions.

  • Maintain professionalism and integrity.

  • Contribute positively to competitor development and the growth of country partner dancing.

  • Be coachable if not yet at the standard required.

Approval decisions are based on demonstrated competence rather than popularity, community standing, or teaching credentials alone.

The Committee retains discretion to determine final judging tier placement and may require additional review if necessary.

The intent of this provision is to recognize nationally established competitive achievement and proven expertise within country dancing.

Factors Considered During Review

The Committee evaluates applicants using a holistic review process. The following factors may be considered:

1. Competitive Experience

Weight may be given to:

  • Number of years actively competing.

  • Participation in NCDC-sanctioned events.

  • Consistency of competition activity.

  • Success across multiple events and regions.

  • Advancement through competitive divisions.

Greater consideration may be given to competitors who have demonstrated sustained success rather than isolated results.

2. Competitive Achievement

Particular weight may be given to:

  • NCDC points earned.

  • Circuit rankings.

  • Finalist placements.

  • Podium finishes.

  • Division championships.

  • Consistent performance against strong fields.

The Committee may consider both lifetime accomplishments and recent competitive activity.

3. Technical Proficiency

Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of:

  • Timing and rhythm.

  • Partnership mechanics.

  • Lead and follow skills.

  • Footwork and body movement.

  • Floorcraft.

  • Musicality.

  • Technique and fundamentals specific to the dance style.

  • Division expectations and progression standards.

The Committee may consider coaching history, demonstrations, competition footage, recommendations, or in-person evaluations.

4. Education and Professional Development

Additional consideration may be given for:

  • Private coaching.

  • Workshops and training.

  • Instructor certifications.

  • Teaching experience.

  • Judge training programs.

  • Mentorship under approved judges.

Education alone does not guarantee approval but may strengthen an application.

5. Judging Readiness

Applicants may be evaluated on their ability to:

  • Assess dancers consistently.

  • Explain placement decisions.

  • Apply published rules and judging criteria.

  • Distinguish between division levels.

  • Maintain objectivity.

The Committee may require a practicum review, mock judging exercise, interview, or panel discussion prior to approval.

  • Mock placements.

  • Comparative judging exercises.

  • Approval decisions.

  • Tier placement.

  • Advancement requests.

  • Deferrals.

  • Temporary approvals.

  • Special circumstances.

Meeting published benchmarks does not automatically guarantee approval.

Likewise, an individual who does not meet every benchmark may still be approved if the Committee determines the applicant possesses sufficient qualifications and judging competency.

Philosophy

The NCDC values both transparency and flexibility. These standards are intended to provide clear guidance on the qualities the Committee considers important while preserving the ability to evaluate each applicant as an individual.

The goal of this policy is not simply to approve judges, but to ensure competitors receive knowledgeable, credible, and consistent evaluations from panels that reflect the highest standards of the organization.
